TEDxTUCSON – Oct. 20
The final weekend of TENWEST will feature a TEDxTucson Salon entitled “Food for Thought”. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The goal of TEDxTucson is to be a catalyst for change – bringing thinkers and doers in the Tucson community together to have meaningful conversations that lead to positive change. The Salon will be open to approximately 500 people will feature 5 speakers on the topic of food and our regional future.
Jesús M. García
“Taste the Past”
Jesús M. García is an ethnobotanist from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, he is the director of the Kino Heritage Fruit Trees Project which locates and replants fruit trees brought to the Pimería Alta region by Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries in the late 1600s.
Dr. Sian Proctor
“Eat Like a Martian”
Dr. Sian Proctor is passionate about feeding astronauts on Mars & humans on Earth. Food is a combination of nutrients & water. She believes we’ll be more sustainable on Earth if we remove the water from food before we ship it around the world.
Chef Jon I. Wirtis
“A Taste of Social Goodness”
Jon I. Wirtis Graduated from Culinary Institute of America, Jon has bee an Executive Chef for 25 years at restaurants & hotels. Instructor at Le Cordon Bleu he believes that lives can be changed through food, serving Social Goodness in non-profits.
Musical Performance By:
Katie sings songs for people who love real songs. Channeling Joni Mitchell but updated and rocked up some. She has has a voices that can lift and soothe, create tension and then release it. It suggests adoration of golden-age (jazzy) folk-pop like Rickie Lee Jones, and Joni Mitchell as well as Fiona Apple. Yet her songwriting alone could take center stage.
